When Life Gives You Lemons…make these!

 By Malissa Diener, Owner www.allnaturaldelights.com.

The old saying goes ” when life gives you lemons make lemonade”. Well I know a thing or three about lemons and you can do much more with lemons then just make lemonade, but by all means go ahead and make a nice cool pitcher to sip on while you get ready to try these sweet recipes.

DID YOU KNOW?

In a study at the university of Trier in Germany, subjects who had high blood levels of vitamin C stayed calmer during stressful situations. Their blood pressure remained steadier, and their stress hormone levels returned to normal faster after the tense situation. The reason: Vitamin C helps balance the neurotransmitters that govern emotional reactions.

Lemony smells are revitalizing and up lifting. The scent molecules of lemons contain turpine, a compound that increases alertness by stimulating the trigeminal nerve, the main sensory nerve in the face. In addition the low molecular weight of the scent molecules triggers a tingling sensation in the nose that energizes the body.

Lemon juice cures everything from discolored nails to cracked cuticles and prevents chipped polish. Lemons are a great source of alpha hydroxy acid, which exfoliates skin and softens cuticles with out drying out nails. Plus the citric acid in lemons gently strips away nail oils so polish adheres better.

Simple Solutions:

Lemon Soak

For dry, rough feet, discolored nails, cuticle removal.

1 bowl warm water
Juice of 1 lemon

Add lemon juice to warm water in bowl. Soak feet or hands for 15 to 20 minutes.

Lemon Rinse

This is the strongest acid rinse. Mix a fresh batch every five days. It becomes stale after the fifth day and should be discarded.

1/4 cup lemon juice, freshly-squeezed
1 1/2 cups water

Combine lemon juice and water. After cleansing, smooth mixture over your face and allow to air dry.

Lemon Facial Mask

For dry skin.

2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix ingredients together. Wash your face, spread on the mixture, leave it on for ten minutes, then wash it off.

Lemon Astringent

For oily skin.

1/2 cup witch hazel
1/4 cup lemon juice

Mix. Apply to face and neck with a clean cotton ball.

Lemon Potpourri

Combine 1 cup fresh lemon peel with 1/2 cup dried lemon verbena leaves and chopped lemongrass. Toss in a few slices of dried oranges (circle slices with skin look nicest) Toss all together and set out in a pretty bowl or jar. When the mix loses it’s scent, pour it into a warm bath to release the remaining scent and oils. If you don’t want the mix floating all over the tub, pour it into some cheese cloth and tie tightly, and let it steep in the water for easier clean up, then toss in the trash when you are finished.
